Before-school physical activity program for Hemenway Elementary School that sparks a child’s mind and body for better learning during the school day.

BOKS is a parent run, physical activity program that sparks a child’s mind and body for better learning during the school day. Start the morning with active play to jump start children’s brains and make them better equipped for learning.

BOKS at Hemenway will run before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 9:10am. It will be available to Hemenway Students Kindergarten to 5th Grade. We will run a 10-12 week program. Each week will introduce a Skill of the Week, the kids will participate in fun fitness activities and BOKS Nutritional Bits.

BOKS is looking for a new Lead Trainer. Hemenway has been extremely fortunate to have Laura Mayhew start our BOKS program at Hemenway. She has also continued to keep the program running of many years. Unfortunately, for Hemenway, this Spring Session is her last session. In order for BOKS to continue at Hemenway for the next school year, we need a new Lead Trainer or pair of Lead Trainers.

What is involved in being a Lead Trainer or Co-Lead Trainers? Lead Trainer(s) must be First Aid Certified and have a valid CORI with FPS. Lead Trainer(s) will work with PTO and Hemenway to come up with two 8-12 week Sessions; one in the Fall and one in the Spring. Lead Trainer(s) are responsible for the registration and holding a lottery (if necessary) for each session; purchasing of BOKS t-shirts for the Fall session and any equipment needed. [Participant session fees cover t-shirt and equipment costs] Lead Trainer(s) are also responsible for the session curriculum and leading each BOKS class. Parent Volunteers will be required and will assist Lead Trainer(s) during BOKS classes.

A BOKS Session runs from 8 to 12 weeks (depending on scheduling) BEFORE school from 8:30 to 9:10am traditionally on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (check-in: 8:20am). BOKS is held outside on the back field as much as possible, only if absolutely necessary is it moved into the gym.

Interested Lead Trainer(s) should plan to shadow Laura during the Spring BOKS Session. BOKS provides free training that Lead Trainers should also plan to take. Please see the link for the full dates but some upcoming dates in Natick are 3/19 and 3/20. BOKS FREE Training. Please feel free to email with any questions, more information, or to volunteer.

* The Spring session will run from 8:30 to 9:10 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Tuesday March 12 thru Thursday June 6.
